I just turned 35 and make a combined $249k and live in the NYC suburbs
Section One: Assets and Debt
Retirement Balance (and how you got there)- $272K (my 401k), $240k (husband 401k), $22k roth IRA’s (combined), and $20k (combined) HSA’s - we both started contributing to everything with our first jobs albeit smaller amounts back then. Now we max out our 401k’s, HSA’s and back door Roth IRA’s.
Equity- 95k. We put down 5% on our home about 5 years ago.
High Yield Savings account/CD’s balances- $121k
Checking account balance- $3k
Taxable brokerage account balance- $47k
Credit card debt (and how you accumulated it)- $0 - pay balances in full every month.
Student loan debt (for what degree)- $0, neither of us ever had any, my bachelors - I went to an in-state public university that my parents paid for, and then my masters was funded by a combination of my first employer, parents, and myself. My husband has a bachelors from an in-state public university that was paid for with scholarships/grants.
Section Two: Income
Main Job Monthly Take Home: $10k combined after all taxes/pre-tax deductions (doesn’t include my bonus which is paid annually).
401k- $3,200 - maxes us both out for the year. We both also get an employer match.
HSA contributions- $400 - maxes us both out after factoring in our employer HSA matches.
Health premiums- $200 - we are both on high deductible plans. This includes health/dental/eye.
Limited FSA contribution- $50 - I use this to buy my contact lenses each year.
Section Three: Expenses
Mortgage / Property Taxes / HOA fees - $3,030 - mortgage balance is $287k. Paying an extra $110/mo principal which is included here. Breakdown of payment is $1,850 principal & interest, $700 property taxes, $480 HOA fee.
Retirement contribution - another $1,000 to max out back-door Roth IRA’s for both of us each year.
Car payment & insurance- $575 for car payment - one car is paid off, the other will be paid off in 9-12 months. Currently paying an extra $125/mo towards principal, included in the number here. Car insurance is another $155/mo.
Train Pass & parking- $425
Electric & natural gas- varies - usually between $150-$300 depending on season/weather
Wifi/Cable/Landline- $155, includes HBO
Gym membership- $170 - unlimited Orangetheory for me
Home insurance: $75
Charity- $25 - given to a local animal shelter. Also contribute to random friend & family fundraisers throughouth the year.
Amazon Prime: $10 ($119/yr)
We also currently transfer $500 month from our savings accounts to the taxable brokerage account.
Day 1- Saturday
6:15am- up and playing around on my phone
7am- get out of bed and dressed for Orangetheory, put in contacts, brush teeth, and put on deodorant.
7:30am- mix up a BCAA water bottle, feed cats and clean litterbox on my way out the door for OTF
8am- OTF endurance day. I start on the rower. Try to lift heavy (for me) on the floor. Get in 2.3 miles on the tread block. I slowed my base and push paces down today since I'm recently back to low carb eating after a 3 month hiatus and my body is still adjusting.
9:30am- home and making breakfast. Husband gets toast with cream cheese and salami, I make a low carb cheese quesadilla along with some leftover steak for myself. Plus cold brew with liquid stevia and half & half. Put away the two loads of laundry I did last night and throw in the last load.
10am- body shower and AM skincare routine. Too Cool for School Eggzyme cleanser, Paula’s Choice resist normal/oily toner, Paula’s Choice 2% BHA, The Ordinary caffeine solution 5% + EGCG, Paula’s Choice Power Berry serum and vitamin C booster, Paula’s Choice resist super light wrinkle defense + SPF 30. It's the weekend so no makeup.
10:30- errands with the husband. He gets a haircut - $15 with tip, and I pick up some groceries. I'm planning to go to Trader Joe's later so just some staples for now. Bread for my husband, heavy cream and organic boneless chicken thighs for a recipe tomorrow, and some Vermont cured meat sticks I have a coupon for - $16.37. Next we go to the library so I can get a card. Husband waits for me in the car so we don't have to pay for parking since the library is downtown.
12:30pm- drive to my in laws. They live about 40 min away and my husband helps a lot around the house and yard. We all park ourselves outside in the nice weather and I play fetch with the dog and catch up with my sister in law.
2pm- realize we should eat lunch. I brought leftovers with me so I eat that then make a Trader Joe's run. It's a light grocery week since we're going out of town next week. I get shredded cabbage, fresh sauerkraut, pepper salami, sparkling limeade, organic eggs, croissants, feta cheese, fiery chicken indian and hatch chile mac and cheese frozen meals - $37.24. Anything not low carb is for the husband! I also run into the liquor store next door to pick up a specific IPA I also have the double and triple versions of so we can do a progressive tasting. 16oz 4 pack with tax and bottle deposit is $15.08. Craft beer is my one non low carb indulgence and big hobby.
3:15pm- back and change into my bathing suit to play with my nieces. SPF everywhere. Eventually get out of the jumbo kiddie pool to dry off and relax in the sun.
6pm- dinner. Grilled chicken thigh with a cucumber-yogurt sauce, salad with blue cheese dressing, and an ear of fresh summer corn. So worth the carbs. After dinner I read while my husband plays outside with the girls.
7:15pm- drive home and stop to fill up gas - $35.52. My friend is at a brewery and picks up 2 barrel aged porters I asked for after she sent me the bottle/can list, I paypal her $25.
8pm- feed the cats, husband and I both shower, I wash my hair. Not using anything super fancy for that these days. I’m loving Not your Mothers Bamboo Charcoal & purple moonstone shampoo and conditioner, plus Amika Bust your Brass shampoo once a week. I put away the last load of laundry from this morning. Night time skin routine- Too Cool for School Eggzyme cleanser, Paula’s Choice 1% retinol booster, Sunday Riley Juno facial oil, Bliss triple oxygen eye gel, Too Cool for School Egg Mellow cream. Put Bumble & Bumble no blow dry cream in my hair and let it air dry. It should dry before I go to bed.
9pm- crack a barrel aged imperial stout to share with my husband and watch LivePD.
10:30pm- fall asleep on the couch and eventually go up to bed when my husband does around midnight.
Day 1 total: $129.21
Day 2- Sunday
6:30am- wake up and cuddle with cats, play on phone
7:30am- up and put contacts in and brush my teeth. Strip the bed and wash the sheets. Make breakfast. Croissant with jam and an egg for the husband and a low carb cheese quesadilla and egg for me. The usual cold brew as well.
8:30am- catch up on Master Chef.
10am- put on bathing suit, lather up in SPF, and walk over to my complex pool. Read and take a few dips to cool off throughout. Reapply SPF once. Husbands friend comes over to have my husband teach him how to do some car maintenance.
12:30pm- walk home and take a quick shower and do AM skincare routine. The boys are done so we go down to the river for lunch. End up at local brewery/restaurant. I want to drink other beers later so just water for me to drink. I eat a bunless burger with cheese, arugula, tomato, bacon, and garlic mayo and 10-15 french fries. Husbands friend offers to pay as a thank you for the car work. We walk to the bakery next door and I get ½ a lb of my husbands favorite cookies, $7. It's a good thing our tastes are different so none of his carby foods tempt me.
3pm- drive to local farm market for fresh corn, tomatoes, and cucumbers. $10.60. Come home and veg till we decide it's time for a bike ride.
4:30pm- get changed and head out on our bikes. We go on one of our usual routes, but backwards to change it up. It's super hilly around here. We go 16 miles with about 1,400 ft of elevation in about 1 hour and 23 min (11.5 mph).
6pm- home and get showered. PM skincare routine. Husband puts our bike clothes in the laundry. By 6:30 we are sitting outside on the patio and cracking IPA #1 of 3 for our progressive tasting.
7:30pm- finally get hungry and start to make dinner. Instant pot butter chicken. I snack on some marinated artichokes while waiting for the chicken to cook.
8pm- steam a bag of cauliflower rice in the microwave to put the chicken on top of. By 8:15 we are eating dinner and drinking the double IPA.
9:15pm- finally re-make the bed with clean sheets and crack our last beer, the triple IPA.
9:45pm- fall asleep on the couch and eventually head up to bed at some point.
Day 2 total: $17.60
Day 3- Monday
3am- why am I awake!?! Where is my phone? Grab it from downstairs to put it on the charger on the nightstand and drink some water. One cat jumps up on the bed and settles down next to me. Go back to sleep with my arm around him.
5:40am- alarm goes off, heading to a 6:30am OTF class. Get dressed, put in contacts, brush teeth, put on deodorant. Feed the cats their dry food, I will give them wet when I get home. Make a shot of nespresso for my protein shake later. Mix up a BCAA water bottle. Clean the litter box on my way out the door at 6:05.
6:30am- OTF power day. Start on the rowefloor. Get in 2.2 miles on the tread. There are 11 thirty second “all out” efforts today followed by walking recoveries.
7:45am- home to shower and do AM skincare routine. Weekday makeup routine- Urban Decay eyeshadow primer (sin), eyeshadow (ydk), mascara (perversion), and a shimmery plum Tarte rainforest of the sea lipstick. My spf is tinted so I don’t wear foundation. Get dressed.
8:15am- Finish feeding the cats and get my lunch and snacks together. Make protein shake in my immersion blender- ultra filtered milk (was using Fair Life, just switched to the new Organic Valley one), MCT oil, nespresso shot, protein powder. I run back upstairs to grab 2 items that just sold on Poshmark. I don’t have time to print the label at home so I package them up for now.
8:30am- a little behind schedule leaving for work but I am walking in the door at 9am so I made good time.
9am- get settled at my desk and print out shipping label and drop off Poshmark sale in a mail bin. Next I open up the presentation materials for a meeting I am attending tomorrow and review them.
10am- quick team meeting to go over our status with the package we send out to senior management with the monthly financial results.
12pm- lunch. I bring my lunch every day, today it’s a leftover turkey burger covered in Rao’s Arrabiata sauce and mozzarella cheese. We need to find airport parking for our trip next week and I just got a coupon to use that expires tonight so I search around the site and read reviews before settling on a place that will be $55 for our full stay after taxes/fees/coupon. I only have to pay $8.50 now, the rest is due after we get back and are checking out.
2pm- head downstairs for coffee. Our cafeteria has a free barista and my afternoon iced americanos are becoming a daily thing.
3:30pm- finalize my review of the monthly close workpapers and dig into a snack- baby carrots and homemade pimento cheese dip. Next I work on a workpaper that I prepare and give to my manager to have ready in case questions come up in our meeting with senior management in a few days.
6pm- head out. We have summer Fridays and can leave at 2 if we make up our hours during the other days of the week. Today wasn’t bad, I spent the last 30 min or so just BSing with my manager before we both leave.
6:30pm- home and feed the cats. I read for a bit until Jeopardy comes on- if I’m home I always watch, it’s a tradition from my childhood. One cat hops up on the bed with me and I give him some pets.
7:30pm- after Jeopardy I take a bath and wash my hair. PM skincare routine + no blow dry cream.
8:15pm- heat up leftover instant pot butter chicken and cauli rice. Husband gets home.
9pm- feeling like a little dessert tonight, I have two Choc Zero squares that I dip into RX vanilla almond butter while watching Bachelor in Paradise. So trashy but I can’t help it. I love the manufactured drama. While watching I play with and brush the cats.
10pm- head upstairs for bed and spend some quality time with the husband. Fall asleep around 11.

Day 4- Tuesday
6:15am- awake and play on my phone and cuddle with cats. Enjoy my rest day from working out.
7:15am- downstairs to feed the cats, clean the litter box, and take out the trash. My husband took the garbage bags from the kitchens and bathrooms down already and put the big trash can behind the car in the garage for me, so all I have to do is drag it outside.
7:30am- contacts, teeth brushing, shower, AM skin + makeup routine, deodorant, get dressed
8am- back downstairs to get my lunch and snacks for the day ready. Make my protein shake. Out the door by 8:15, I get there by 8:45, plenty of time to spare for my 9am meeting.
9am- sit in on first hour and fifteen minutes of the meeting then get to my part of the presentation. The CFO, Controller, Treasurer, and VP of HR are all present so I am a little nervous (hello impostor syndrome!) but it goes well and I’m done by 10:30. I get good feedback later from the Controller & Treasurer.
11am- quick meeting to go over the status of the agenda for an all day department quarterly team meeting I am helping plan for next month.
12pm- lunch. Same as yesterday. I love leftovers and have no problem eating the same thing a few days in a row! I go sit by the window and play on my phone for a bit. I check Mint and see my husband has re-loaded his Dunkin card- $25. I have a Birchbox birthday coupon that’s been burning a hole in my pocket so I use it on an order that includes re-stocking my Amika Bust your Brass shampoo and the Coola SPF drops I’ve been eyeing for awhile. I also use my Birchbox points to offset some of the cost. After tax, coupons, and points, it comes to $55.13.
1:30pm- after finishing up my last monthly close workpaper, I head downstairs for my iced americano a little early since I have a 2PM meeting.
2pm- team meeting to re-group on a presentation my team gave to management at the end of last month, we work through some minor changes and updates they suggested so we can finalize it and have everything we agreed upon properly documented.
5:45pm- pack up to meet a high school friend for dinner - Thai food. I’m eating carbs tonight. I haven’t seen my friend in a couple months and haven’t splurged on Thai food for almost 3 months.
6:15pm- dinner. We share steamed veggie dumplings and spring rolls and I have drunken noodles with tofu for my entree. So worth it. We haven’t been to this restaurant before, it’s good but a little pricey. It was great to catch up on life and talk about our plans for the upcoming months. I order a meal to take home to my husband since Thai is one of his favorites too. I do the math and have them split the bill so my friend only pays her portion. My part of the bill comes to $63.34 with tip.
8:10pm- home just in time for Bachelor in Paradise. But first I need to feed the cats and shower and do my PM skincare routine. I am DVR’ing it and put it on around 8:30. I catch up to it just as it’s ending at 10pm.
10:30pm- lights out for me! Husband restocks on some pet supplies from Amazon- $40.63.

Day 5- Wednesday
5:40am- alarm goes off. Up to get ready for OTF, usual get ready routine and chores on my way out the door by 6:05.
6:30am- OTF endurance day. It’s a signature workout, Orange Inferno. I’ve never done it before. I start on the rowefloor and don’t love this block. The tread block is a run/row and I do love that and am not ready for it to end when it does! I get in 1.8 miles.
7:45am- home and feed the cats. Eventually get in the shower and do AM skin + makeup routine. Get dressed and make my protein shake and get my lunch and snacks ready for the day.
8:35am- don’t know how it’s this late already - oh wait, I do. Got an email for the Athleta warehouse online sale and do some browsing and put 2 things in my cart but don’t buy them, so now I’m running out the door. Luckily not much traffic and I’m walking into work at the same time as my boss around 9:05!
10:30am- meeting with the Treasury team. I agree to work on an analysis for them that they would like by next week. Since I’ll be out then, I get started on it as soon as I’m back to my desk.
12pm- lunch. Something different (but familiar!) today, leftover instant pot butter chicken and cauliflower rice. It’s better the longer it sits so I am happy to be eating these leftovers.
1:15pm- I have a 1:30-3 meeting today so I head downstairs for my iced americano. Since this is becoming a daily thing, I bring a reusable cup today so I don’t create waste from taking a plastic container. I also use my metal straw from my protein shake earlier today that I’ve rinsed out.
1:30pm- monthly financial review meeting with management. Today we meet with the Controller and align on everything so that we can meet with the CFO tomorrow. Meeting runs over by 5 min.
3:05pm- staff meeting with one of my direct reports followed by a cross-functional meeting for a system implementation my team is a part of. By 4 I am finally done with meetings so I have a snack- baby carrots + pimento cheese dip.
5:30pm- head out for the day and I’m home by 6. I feed the cats, and do my shower, hair washing, and PM skincare routine.
7:30pm- start to make dinner. We need to eat all the veggies I bought this week so I whip up a quick coleslaw. I slice a tomato and make a tomato/mozzarella salad. I shuck all the corn and boil it. I heat up some Appelgate hot dogs and top with sauerkraut and sugar free ketchup.
8:15pm- start watching Masterchef. I also download the library’s app on my kindle so I can borrow books now that I have a library card. Husband and I share a 16oz NEIPA.
10pm- head up to bed and spend some quality time with the husband. Fall asleep just before 10:45.

Day 6- Thursday
6am- awake, play on my phone, cuddle with cats. Taking another rest day since it’s my first week doing 4 OTF classes (I’m going tomorrow) and I don’t want to over-do it. I check Mint and see I’ve been charged for a monthly food subscription box. I try and do these every other month but I forgot to skip the next month’s delivery so 2 months in a row it is - $40.
7:15am- finally get myself up and running, contacts, teeth, shower, AM skin + makeup routine, deodorant, get dressed, etc. I feed the cats and when they are done I brush and play with them with them both.
8:15am- make my protein shake, get my lunch and snacks together and head out the door. I’m in the office by 8:50.
10am- meeting with Treasury and representatives from one of the systems we use to go over tips & tricks to using the system and ask questions.
12pm- lunch. Leftover hot dogs + sauerkraut, and coleslaw. I sit by the window and play on my phone for a bit.
1pm- team meeting to work on a presentation for the quarterly team meeting next month.
2pm- meeting with CFO to go over prior month financials.
4pm- happy hour to celebrate summer and filing the most recent earnings release and 10-Q. It’s at a local brewery so I’m pumped. I pay for my sampler ($11.50 with tip) and try 4 different IPA’s - a sour IPA, milkshake IPA, a NEIPA, and a double NEIPA. Someone buys the next round and I have a fruited light lager to stay on the lower ABV scale. I also drink some water. After socializing for 3 hours, I pick up a 4 pack of the sour IPA to bring to a party next week - $19.49. I head home around 7 and am there by 7:30.
8pm- make breakfast for dinner for myself (2 eggs, low carb cheese quesadilla) and heat up the last of the butter chicken for my husband. I take a bath and do my PM skincare routine. I’m wiped so I lay down at 9 and play on my phone for a bit before falling asleep around 9:45pm.

Day 7- Friday
3am- Wake up to a yowling cat. My husband also wakes up. We check on her and she seems fine so we just shush her and try to go back to sleep. It’s hard for me and I’m awake until a little after 4am.
5:40am- alarm goes off. Up to get ready for OTF, usual get ready routine and chores on my way out the door by 6:05.
6:30am- it’s a power day. I’m taking 2 days off so I have no hesitation starting on the tread today. It’s a good mix of push paces and all out paces with walking recoveries. I get in 2.50 miles. On the floor it’s a lot of rowing which I like!
7:45am- home to shower and do AM skincare + makeup routine. I’m downstairs by 8:15 to feed the cats and make my protein shake. I pack my lunch but no snacks since it’s summer hours!
9am- at work. I have a quick team meeting with one of my direct reports and then we go to a conference room to troubleshoot some issues that came up in one of our close processes last month that slowed us down. We look into each one by one and see where the issue came from (system vs manual) and make notes so we can reach out to the parties to resolve them so they don’t happen again.
10:30am- I have a break in meetings so I check into our flight for tomorrow and check the flight on the way home. We did basic economy on 2 different airlines. The one tomorrow I paid for a carry on bag when I made the reservation months ago, the one on the way home we can’t bring a standard carry on into the cabin with us without paying a penalty on top of the checked bag fee, so I go on the website for that flight and pay for a checked bag - $30.
11am- review a government survey my team has to submit next week. These are the bane of our existence.
11:30am- send Treasury the analysis I’ve been working on since our meeting the other day. Get hungry and have a snack. This works out so I can eat my lunch later closer to when I’m leaving for summer hours.
12:45pm- meet quickly with Treasury to walk them through the analysis. Leave with a follow up for the same information for more periods of time. Call over one of my direct reports to do one month together and make notes so she can work on it and finish it up next week while I’m out.
1:15pm- eat lunch. Leftover hot dogs and sauerkraut and the last of the baby carrots and pimento dip. Go downstairs for an iced americano and get talked into a new cold brew the barista is testing.
2pm- head out. I have a 2:30 hair appointment to get the toner done. I am trying to stretch out my highlights another couple weeks and think this should help.
3:45pm- done at the hair salon. The time went quickly and I love chatting with my stylist. It was $55 plus I tipped $11, so $66 total. I drive across the street to fill up on gas - $32.48.
5:15pm- arrive at a semi local brewery to pick up some cans for my friend’s party next weekend. It’s not good enough these days to go to the liquor store, for the best beers you have to go to the brewery itself. We are spoiled in NY with lots of distribution but a lot of the friends at the party next week are beer snobs like me so I want to bring some good stuff. I get three four packs, I will split them up to bring half to the party and keep the rest. $46.01. Traffic was horrible on the way here and it was further than I remember, luckily I can go a different way home and it takes 30 minutes less to get home.
6:15pm- home and scrounging for dinner ideas. We have a lot of veggies to use up and the peppers from our container garden are starting to be ready so I google an idea with ingredients on hand and get started. I don’t have any meat besides bacon so I make a cold veggie salad and dice up the bacon to mix in. Plus a tomato/mozz salad on the side.
8pm- hop in the shower then do PM skincare routine.
8:30pm- finally remember to turn on the football. It’s pre-season but I’m not complaining. Finish packing and getting ready to leave for the airport bright and early in the morning. Pour a beer to share with my husband.
9pm- flip between football and livepd until I got to bed around 11.

Lastly, reflect on your diary! This was a fairly busy week for me. Money wise I’d say it was about average. I definitely get sucked in by coupons and have moments where I buy things I don’t really need, but at the end of the day, unless there is a big expense like a vacation we’ve planned for or we need a new appliance/electronic (our tv broke earlier this year), we are cash flow positive at the end of each month. I am surprised I didn’t buy any clothes this week. No denying craft beer was a big part of my budget, I did buy more than usual to stock up for the party the following week. Overall, I would say I’m most proud of how we are aggressively saving for retirement while we can, before any kids enter the picture.
