Meta Miner beginner guide for algo switching on moneroocean.stream (2020 version)

Meta Miner beginner guide for algo switching on moneroocean.stream (2020 version)
Hi everyone,
it took me a while to figure out how to configure Mata Miner and I got some help from the developer, so I thought I put together a beginner guide so that everyone can value from this.
Last updated: 2020-06-19
Changelog:
1.1 - 2020-06-19 Updated run.cm as you no longer need to mention xmrig in the command line.
1.0 - 2020-06-17 Crerated initial Version

Into

So first things first:
I'm not a pro miner, I would rate myself as occasional (Corona) miner. So this guide is brought to you with no expectation of being 100% accurate nor complete. If you find something which is "wrong", be a good person and let me know and I'll adjust the posting here. Also if something is unclear, I'll try to adjust my post, just let me know.
Things might change over time, especially with miner software and algos getting updates frequently. Same her, if something does no longer work, let me know and I try to update the post.
As we all know, there is not just one way to Rome. I've tried to chose the easiest way for everyone. If you know of a simpler way, let me know.
MetaMiner (MM) is not a miner by itself, it's more like an wrapper around existing miners. So you need miners like xmrig to get this working. Don't worry I go over this below, I won't, however, go into too much details about how to do the advanced configuration for a specific miner, unless its required for MM to work properly.
I expect you having a working XMRig configuration with either AMD or NVidia files and configuration. If this is not the case, please refer to other guides first and get familiar with XMRig. Best is to generate a new config.json for XMRig MO and do a new round of algo bench marking to include all algos.
As said above MM is a wrapper around existing miners. It does this to enable miners which are incapable of switching between mining algorithms to do exactly this. The biggest value (at the time of writing this guide) in MM comes when doing GPU mining. For CPU mining you can simply use the XMRig MO version which is already (some) capable of switching between algos, there should be no need to use MM. However, you can also use MM to wrap around XMRig MO for CPU mining, but for now I will only talk on GPU mining here.
I'll write this guide for the moneroocean.stream pool. It should also work for other algo switching pools but this has not been tested and your setup might need to be slightly adjusted.
This guide is intended for Windows 10 (1909) x64. I'm sure however that the setup for other operating systems are similar, but I can't give you any support on that (unless you send me Hardware :D).
And to end this section, you might have realized, I'm not a native English speaker. Feel free to correct my wordings. I like to write this guide for easy reading, if something is unclear or my English is simply bad, let me know !

Sources

I will put the current Version Numbers into the brackets, so you see if a newer Version is available and might not work with the current Guide.
Meta Miner: https://github.com/MoneroOcean/meta-minereleases (v3.1)
NodeJS Installer: https://nodejs.org/dist/v8.11.3/node-v8.11.3-x64.msi
XMRig MO: https://github.com/MoneroOcean/xmrig/releases (v6.2.0 - Beta mo2)
MoneroVMiner: https://github.com/xmvdev/MoneroVMinereleases (MoneroV 2.1 Miner - v1.1)
SwapReferenceMiner: https://github.com/swap-dev/SwapReferenceMinereleases (SwapReferenceMiner-1.2.0)
As you can see, all these programs are "free" and open source. You can check the source code if you like and compile the exe yourself. When compiling the executable, you can remove the Dev fee if you like, but keep in Mind, even when the application is free for you, it costs the developer time to update and improve it. Dedicating a very small amount of mining time to the coder is fair and I encourage you to use the pre-compiled exe files.
Also this guide is based on the pre-compiled executables. If you compile them yourself and alter the source code, I can't help you with that and you are on your own !

Anti Virus

When downloading the above software, your AntiVirus (AV) application should flag the zip/exe as Virus/Malware/Adware/Crypto Miner. This is good! If you AV application does not do this, I would ask myself if I'm are using the correct product!
Your AV software does exactly what is expected of it. Putting a Crypto Miner on a normal user PC is usually done by cyber criminals who want to abuse the CPU/GPU power, therefore AV companies around the globe have decided to put this software on the black list.
To avoid getting these zip/exe files into the quarantine, create a exclusion beforehand and download the file directly to this folder. How to do this can vary per product and is something I can't help you with. I have chosen a Subfolder of my Documents folder for this purpose. Please do not create an exclusion for large/existing folders. You still want to see if a crypto miner gets installed on your machine without you knowing it.

Getting started with XMRig

XMRig comes in two flavors, the official and the MO (Monero Ocean) release (linked above). The MO version comes with additional mining algos and 0% Fee for Mining on MO by default. You can use this executable on other pools too, but the mining fee will switch to the XMRig defaults. For this guide we focus on the MO version. So when I say XMRig I always mean XMRig MO from now on!
Download and extract xmrig-v6.2.0-beta-mo2-win64.zip to one new folder inside the recently excluded. For this guide I call it "MM-GPU". So my path is: "C:\Users\User\Documents\Guide\MM-GPU"
and it should now look like this:

Extracted into the MM-GPU folder:

Open the config.json in a text editor like notepad (++) and edit the following lines in the config.
https://preview.redd.it/l5axh1r9zg551.png?width=383&format=png&auto=webp&s=ea50ca1e62b0b3fa645b60b9ae2b409975b90a07
In the "cpu" Section set "enabled" to false and either in the "opencl" (for AMD) or in the "cuda" (for NVIDIA) section "enabled" to true. I got a NVIDIA card so I've chosen CUDA.
Right at the bottom, update the lines with the following information:
https://preview.redd.it/wrwdjpodzg551.png?width=478&format=png&auto=webp&s=b9bbfd94be3457278464457562c45e08944cb732
"log-file": "Xmrig.log","url": "localhost:3333","user": "YOUR_WALLET_ADDRESS","pass": "x","bench-algo-time": 60,
ensure you put in your Monero Wallet address in the user value and a rig name/password.
Save this and run XMRig as administrator ! You should see something like this:
https://preview.redd.it/w1bexd3czg551.png?width=979&format=png&auto=webp&s=a6d53b40ad0c7434a937be5dc22d902cd529a438
This will run for a while, XMRig will now check the performance of the CPU against various mining algos. Let it complete and close the window. Edit the config.json and point the URL to localhost:3333
"url": "localhost:3333",
XMRig should be configured correctly now.

MoneroVMine Setup

Download MoneroVMine and extract it to the following structure into the MM-GPU folder:
https://preview.redd.it/n6l2gv2jzg551.png?width=430&format=png&auto=webp&s=2a53a659d61986071d53c2b82129b2e3bf0b4dc0
Now launch the "MoneroVMiner.exe" inside the bin folder:
https://preview.redd.it/woxob85kzg551.png?width=535&format=png&auto=webp&s=3af720b7ff9493ba95825b46cf7f3a760d16340e
After one or two minutes you should be asked for the pool information. Simply enter it as following:
pool address: gulf.moneroocean.stream:10001Your wallet AddressRigname: your rig name followed by a ~c29v !!!!!
Let MoneroVMiner run for 5 minutes and note down the GH/s for your rig, you will need this later on.After that edit the config.xml inside the bin folder to point to localhost:3333 as shown below:
https://preview.redd.it/go6r9i620h551.png?width=490&format=png&auto=webp&s=cd3148a49f2d4150105bd0e7e33cd919d43b76f0

SwapReferenceMiner Setup

Download SwapReferenceMiner and extract it to the following structure into the MM-GPU folder:
https://preview.redd.it/tk17k9xb0h551.png?width=397&format=png&auto=webp&s=897b2298d5831d1da211b1b48042904b965614d1
launch the "SwapReferenceMinerCLI.exe" inside the SwapReferenceMiner folder:
pool address: gulf.moneroocean.stream:10001TLS: nYour wallet Addresspool password: your rig name followed by a ~c29s !!!!!
Let SwapReferenceMiner run for 5 minutes and note down the GH/s for your rig, you will need this later on.After that edit the config.xml inside the bin folder to point to localhost:3333 as shown below:
https://preview.redd.it/by0c4zpv0h551.png?width=552&format=png&auto=webp&s=9c883428b523bf3c9ecc46011a9f02234fc19379

Meta Miner Setup

Download and install the NodeJS installer.
Then Download Meta Miner and extract the exe to the MM-GPU folder:
https://preview.redd.it/5i7c1yaf1h551.png?width=400&format=png&auto=webp&s=79e2c71fabce2f6713dc7735b6687e5fb0d84a7d
right click into the MM-GPU folder and select new => textfile to create a textfile. Give it any name you like with the extention CMD. I've chosen run.cmd
Edit the file and past in the below information:
https://preview.redd.it/pzupk1d4ss551.png?width=495&format=png&auto=webp&s=3e89af46abf0d64c5560b051d8351439f116ecb9

@/ECHO OFF
cd "C:\Users\%username%\Documents\Mining\Meta-Miner-GPU"
start mm.exe -p=gulf.moneroocean.stream:10001

First launch of MM by using the the run.cmd
https://preview.redd.it/pfmrblpm1h551.png?width=979&format=png&auto=webp&s=635890dc8b4c2068feea9de0c22b11979e573598
As you can see MM is missing the mm.json which will now be generated. At the end this file will hold performance counter on your GPU. Therefore MM also needs to run a benchmark which is now starting and take approx. 3 Minutes per mining algorithm. Let it complete and wait till it starts mining.
Now we need to close MM and edit mm.json.
https://preview.redd.it/r9iefju22h551.png?width=631&format=png&auto=webp&s=6f153521d7e870d5faf9d9bd5a64c171b35d4041
We need to add/update 4 Lines in the mm.json
in the algos section update/add:
"c29s": "SwapReferenceMineSwapReferenceMinerCLI mode=rolling",
"c29v": "MoneroVMinebin/MoneroVMiner"
in the algo_perf section update/add:
"c29s": your value,
"c29v": your value,
For "your value" please see the Github info:
Please note that your c29 miner reports hashrate in graphs per second (gps), while algo_perf in mm.js will have it in hps, which is gps divided by 32 for c29s algo and gps divided by 16 for c29v algo.
So lets say we got 5GH/s then we would need to enter 0.15625 for c29s and 0.3125 for c29v
"c29s": 0.15625,
"c29v": 0.3125,
And as final step, copy the config.xml from "MM-GPU\MoneroVMiner\bin" to the "MM-GPU" folder. This is required as we use a batch to run MM.exe and CD into the path.
If you have done everything as described and nothing bad happened, MM should start mining on your GPU:
https://preview.redd.it/1j9eiq6e4h551.png?width=979&format=png&auto=webp&s=5f8442381fb522d626c28572c8d599c7023c87aa
I hope you enjoyed this guide and I was able to help you successfully GPU mining using Meta Miner.
Over the next few days I will update/correct a few things.
Leave a comment if you found this useful or got something (hopefully nice?) to say :)
