Why Update Beacons?

There have been many suggestions on the topic of how to improve beacons on this sub, so I thought I would add my ideas to the list. Currently, I believe that beacons are fairly balanced and intend to only make minor changes that will not alter the current mechanics of beacons, only add to them. One issue I think that many beacon suggestions have is that they try to change too much or make beacons too powerful. I try to keep it simple and balanced in my suggestion.
The purpose of beacons is to act as an end-game item that allows players to set up an area of effect (AOE) with certain status effects. There are two fundamental properties of beacons: the materials that make up the base pyramid, and the size of the base pyramid. Currently, the material that makes up the beacon base does not change the functionality of the beacon, my suggestion gives functionality to the block type of the beacon base.
I want to update beacons beacuse I think that their material cost (a nether start +164 valuable blocks for max tier) is too high for their function. Minecraft has really evolved in the past few years, and the meta game seems to be tending towards players flexing their creativity with mega builds. These mega builds have been enabled in part by beacons - primariliy through the haste II effect. However, I believe beacons are still being underutilized by the community.
Additionally, beacons haven't really had a major update in function since the 1.5 days (or earlier the wiki isn't super clear). I think it is high time beacons were updated.

  • Iron: Level Up an existing status effect (eg. allows things like regen II or haste III).

  • Netherite: Wither

Increasing the Range Of Beacons

The biggest complaint of many players is that beacon ranges are too short and I agree. I saw a post earlier today by u/TheDragonWarrior2284 that details an idea to use amethyst shards to increase the range of beacons. I think this is a great idea and will explain my modified version:
  • The original radius range of beacons will not change (ie: Level 1=20, 2=20, 3=40, 4=50)
  • You will be able to extend the radius range of a beacon by +15 blocks by adding one amethyst shard to the beacon.
  • You will only be able to add shards for each level in your beacon (ie: Level 1 = 1 shard) for a maximum of 4 shards, and a maximum of +60 blocks at the highest level.
  • This increases the total maximum range of beacons to 110 blocks in radius, which effectively quadruples the surface area a maxed out beacon can cover.
  • There will be four slots to place amethyst shards - they will not be consumed when placed

Block Power - Functionality for Block Type of Beacon Base

Block power is my idea for adding new effects to beacons. These effects will only be available if you have a tier 4 beacon whose base consists of only one block type (eg: iron, gold, emerald, diamond, netherite). Each block type will have only one extra effect, that will be separate from other effects of the beacon (except for iron). This means that a full tier 4 beacon with a single block type could have a maximum of 3 effects. Beacons made of mixed block types will still work, they simply will not have access to the additional Block power effect.

Iron's effect will be to level up an existing effect. A full iron beacon will allows you to add one level of status effect to any existing effect already active in the beacon. The effects that you can upgrade will depend on what effects you have chosen to activate in your primary power and secondary power spots. This means that with an iron beacon you can create these combinations of effects:
Speed III or Haste III or Resistance III or Jump Boost III or Strength III
Regen II and Speed I or Regen II and Haste I or ... etc.
Regen I and Speed II or Regen I and Haste II or ... etc.

Gold's effect will be glowing. The glowing effect with be applied to every mob in the radius of the beacon. This would allow players to locate missing mobs, or locate caves easier by highlighting all the monsters underground. This could prove especially useful when trying to spawn proof an area for farming.

Emerald's effect will be luck. There is currently no way to obtain the luck status effect in survival Minecraft, this will change that. Currently, luck only increases the quality of fishing loot, however, this may be a good time to update luck as well. For example, luck could also be used to increase the rate of fortune.

Diamond's effect will be saturation. I will admit my entire reasoning behind making this suggestion was to create a balanced way to get saturation in-game. Minecraft's hunger mechanic can be annoying at times, especially when you have to stop to eat all the time in the middle of a build or whatnot. Saturation is a powerful effect as it will eliminate the need to eat, however, it is balanced out by the fact that obtaining a tier 4 diamond beacon is quite the challenge. (You may have to modify how regeneration works with the saturation effect, as that may be too OP with this method)

Netherite's effect will be wither. Obtaining a full netherite beacon is an incredible feat, and as such comes with an incredibly powerful reward. The wither status effect will be applied to any mob within the radius of the beacon, essentially creating an entire area that nothing can survive in (except Withers and wither skeletons). This could be extremely powerful for mob farming, and I believe is quite balanced considering the material cost.
