A Discussion on Genshin Impact from a Chinese player
This is gonna be my first post on Reddit. I want to share some of my concerns about Genshin impact as well as addressing some of reasons behind the hot topics we have recently around Genshin impart. I want to say that I love this game very much. Though there is a lot things should be changed, I believe those will be changed since it's only about 10 days after Global launch. I really appreciate all the love from western audience and all the critical feedback they provided to the game. I think we should keep those going to make this game better, but I would still point out a few things that I think differently than western players.
First of all I want to introduce myself: I am a Chinese who is currently working in US. (So English is not my first language, please excuse me if I make some stupid errors related to language in this post) I had been a veteran in Gacha game. I played many Gacha games, including Honkai impact 3, FGO, Epic seven, P&D, Dragalia Lost and Azurlane. I also played many PC single player game such as Nier Automata, Witcher 3 and MMOs like WoW and FF14.
I started Genshin impact at launch. I was playing a lot after work everyday to the point I only sleep 3 hours per day till a near completion in term of exploration in Genshin.
Currently I am AR 37 and working on clearing abyss floor 11. I bought out all "first-time purchase", grabbed 5 dollar month card and bought the 20 dollar version battle pass. I am pretty lucky on rolls so I have a few 5 star characters and weapons that can carry me through abyss. I feel a bit obligated to support since overall this game is a blast. I haven't seen Chinese produced a game like this in a while.
First, I want to talk about Gacha rate. It is abysmal if you just glance at it, but I wouldn't call it's terrible because of the new player reward right now. You should be able to snatch a 5-star characteweapon every 3 rerolls when you play till AR7. Though Gacha has some innate problem which I believe they should improve.
- They shouldn't mix the weapon/character Gacha unless it's from the regular Gacha. So if I am aiming for Venti banner I only expect to summon characters from Gacha. When I am going for weapons, I don't want to see any characters popping up. Also if this is the case, the pity for weapon should be lowered.
- The basic rate in a long run can be scary. Also the uprate for the up character should be improved. (80 percent or 100 percent instead of 50 percent) To be honest, at this point I don't want to pull anything at all. Instead, I would spend all my Primogems on resin recharge. ( 160+90 per day right now allow me to do 3 charges )
- They probably should make Abyss reset from floor 1 even with way less reward but it still provides us a consistent currency for resin refill or wish pull. Right now, even though it's early stage of game, the abyss difficulty at 1-8 for complete F2P player is too high.
The reason why Gacha game is very popular in Asia is mostly due to Asian people has a lot heavier working shift in average compare to US and Europe. I wouldn't say people don't care, but a lot of them can't enjoy a game by sitting there and play hours and hours anymore. This is one of the reasons why Chinese couldn't make a decent game in a while since no one around would play it unless the game is targeted toward Western audience and planned to be earning more revenue outside of Mainland. Gacha on the other hand is very easy to get you hooked and you can progress at a good pace if you pay every once in a while.
Since I played Honkai impact 3 back in the days and many other Gacha games, I don't particularly think Resin is a huge problem like a lot other people do. However, I would still like Mihoyo to invent some daily mission to reward around 60 extra Resin, but shouldn't be much more than that. Resin in Genshin is basically stamina in any other Gacha game, it is a currency to prevent you from growing too fast and clear the game. I have seen people asking for more grinding content so they could spend more time in this game such as Final Fantasy 14. I might have a very unpopular opinion but I would hate that to happen. Because the content will be cleared out even faster that way. Thus I would want them to give us more resin but I would not want them to give us a system where you can grind out everything if you keep playing in same day, unless they provide means to pay for those at a good cost. Because those should only happen in a paid game or MMO, not a F2P Gacha game, as for me who is working don't really have time to play that much unless I don't sleep. So this bring us to the topic of content.
Content wise, Genshin has a lot for a Gacha game to offer. Though it has very little if you compare it to any other great games such as Nier Automata, Witcher, BotW. This, however, will be fixed in a long run providing that Mihoyo can pump out update in a good pace. (Which they do in Honkai impact 3)
Genshin is wierd in a way that it both attracts people who never touched Gacha game before and Gacha game veterans. Then it becomes a problem where it neither provide enough content for those people who loves story-driven single-player game player, nor its rate and progression speed matches the taste of regular Gacha veteran. I have to say that I regret that I slept only 3 hours per day in first week of game to rush content. But I still feel it's alright that I just log on twice a day, clear commission and resin then I log off. It takes about one hour for me and I think it's a healthy time cost for a Gacha game. If a player didn't rush content, they would have roughly 150-200 hours exploration to do beside those daily chores, which to be honest, is more than enough content for you to do in this game. Thus, I would invite all player to play it slowly and enjoy it.
Lastly I want to mention some random stuff here and there.
- There should be events and they should try to pump them out ASAP. There was indeed no reward during Chinese national holiday and Mid-Autumn Festival for Chinese server, which surprised me. However I believe Chinese server got roughly 51 pulls for new player so I can see why Mihoyo didn't want to give out any freebies. The reason this is Mihoyo claimed that Genshin impact has its own holiday in game. I am suspicious about that because Mihoyo should still focus on real-life holiday since it's when people have time to play the game. So I would remain a speculating status toward that claim. Hopefully Mihoyo don't fail us.
- Co-op should be a lot better. My experience for this game so far is only single player. Though Mihoyo probably want to make sure that we can't just farm with our alt account over and over for the chest, they might still be able to up the chance of random event significantly when you play with friends. So you can explore with friends for fun as well as getting a decent amount of materials.
- Mihoyo that I know base on my experience about Honkai impact 3 is very generous. So even F2P players are getting a lot of goodies. While I am remaining hopeful that they will do the same to this game, our community shouldn't stop the effort to provide them critical feedback.
- About the rating of this game in China and recent deletion of reddit suggestion on Mihoyo forum: I would say is the world is never as simple as we see. If you have taken a look at Genshin impact bilibili or Taptap rating, you would notice the bad rating has been happening since day 1, there is a lot more happens during the launch of Mobile version on Sept.28th. But anyone who actually played this game shouldn't be giving this game a 0-1 star. The following is just my opinion: As a shinning star in Chinese game industry that made a game that Tencent and Netease can't possibly do, you would expect fake reviews done by some hired writers and then a lot other people will be easily bandwagoned along with it. (Literally because the review for the rating doesn't make sense if you can read Chinese) It's pretty common in world of business, but it still saddens me that people don't appreciate such a polished game. Even though Genshin is making a good revenue, all the rating cross platform and feedback does count for something for investors to look at. So I assume Mihoyo is doing a lot damage control, but this shouldn't stop us from providing more feedbacks. And just for something off-topic, Black myth: Wukong is the other game that people have very high expectation from China next, which of course is not made from the major company. You guys should check it out.
In the end I want to appreciate how much love our community is showing toward Genshin, and I hope it can become better. Thank you for reading and any criticisms are welcomed in comment. You can add me in game UID 600041484 If you have any questions related to game or wanna play together.
I am 31 years old make $110,000 A Year and live in Northeastern PA and work as an Account Manager
Retirement Balance: $78,700.00 - I contribute 7% of my income into my 401K, my company matches 6%. I only recently started contributing at the age of 25. This was the first company I worked for that offered me this option. I also contribute 3% into My ESPP, which I have a balance of $6,760.00 in.
Equity: Our house is valued at $110,000 when we purchased it in 2018 for $100,000. We put a down paying $5,000 and currently owe $90,000 on the house. Our monthly payment is $750.00 but we pay $850.00 a month split down the middle ($425.00 each). We have a 3 Bedroom, 1.5 Bathroom house with a spacious backyard.
Savings Account: $43,900 in one savings account (I have set aside money for our wedding in July 2021 #coronabride in this account as well - I am aiming to have $15,000 to contribute towards the wedding/honeymoon- our wedding budget is about $46K for 250ish guests (if that is even allowed)- my parents contributed $20K and my godparents gave us $1K - our plans post wedding involve creating a savings account with any gifts we receive, which would be our joint emergency fund and $8,350 in a travel/fun savings account. I have a CD with $1,979.00 in it as well, which I will not touch until later in life.
Checking Account: $1,000.00-ish
Credit Card Debt: I pay off my other credit cards in full each month. I have 3 different cards (one for miles and 2 with Bank of America with cash back (I utilized those when I was driving more for work for 3% cash back).
Student Loan Debt: $6,187.00 in a federal loan for my Bachelors Degree (started at $15,326.65 in 2016 as I deferred the loan payments out of college based on not finding a job right away). My parents paid for 3 years of college (I did receive some scholarship money) and I had 2 private loans and 1 federal loan taken out. I recently paid off the 2nd private in beginning of 2020. Those loans started at $2,500.00 each. I paid the first off in full in 2019. I do have plans to try and pay this down sooner (I believe I will have about 24 months left once payments resume) and be “debt free” apart from the mortgage but I am currently focused on having liquid cash/saving for the wedding and kids/new house one day.
Car: $9581.00 Owed - Monthly Payment is $417.00. I doubt my car is worth much more that $7K at this rate. It is 2.5 years old with almost 77K miles on it.
Section Two: Income
Income Progression: I will start this post college: I graduated college in 2011 with a Bachelors in Marketing/International Business. I did not have a full time job offer post college so I worked as a hostess and bank teller while trying to find a full time job. Found a job as a Marketing Manager making $30K commuting an hour away - stayed there 3 Months and found a job as a Sales Assistant commuting 30 minutes away. I stayed there for about 2 Years and was given an opportunity with my current employer doing inside sales. I made $35K Base plus Commission which averaged out to $60K-65K annually. I then was promoted to an outside account manager 3 years ago with a $45K Base plus Commission which averaged to $98K for Year 1 and progressed since. My base is currently $48K.
Main Job Monthly Take Home: I am paid a base salary plus commission (this can average month to month). I would say average (this is on the lower side) take home is $5500.00 a month after Taxes, Health Insurance, 401K and ESPP. I also receive reimbursement for mileage and car, which averages about $400.00 (typically more) a month due to Covid. This past month it was around $600.00.
I do have a life insurance policy through my work that I believe is worth $100K.
I do not combine finances with my fiancé. He does make about $90,000 per year.
Total Take Home per Month: $5,900.00 Side Gig Monthly Take Home: N/A Any Other Monthly Income Here: N/A
Section Three: Expenses
Rent / Mortgage / HOA fees: $425.00 per Month Renters / Home Insurance: Escrow through Mortgage Retirement Contribution: 7% Deducted Savings Contribution: Minimum $1300.00 per Month in Larger Savings Account (typically closer to $2000.00 a month) and Minimum $300.00 per Month in Travel/Fun Account Investment Contribution: 3% Deducted Debt Payments: $223.00 for Federal Loan. I am currently paying around $200.00 or so towards it regardless of payments being paused due to Covid. Electric: Average $65.00 Water: $110.00 Gas: $30.00 during Summer - can be close to $200.00 during Winter Wifi/Cable/Landline: Paid by Fiancé Cellphone: Mom pays (need to switch to fiancé’s plan) and I have a phone through work. Car Payment: $417.00 (23 Payments To Go!)

Car Insurance: $474.00 for 6 Months (just paid on 7/15)
Was there an expectation for you to attend higher education? Did you participate in any form of higher education? If yes, how did you pay for it? Yes, I am the oldest so I felt the pressure to attend and succeed in college. My parents paid for 3 years and the last year of college was student loans. I did receive some scholarships during college.
Growing up, what kind of conversations did you have about money? Did your parent/guardian(s) educate you about finances? No. My parents provided us with whatever was needed and we had annual family vacations, majority of my college was paid for by them. I am extremely lucky and blessed. If I wanted something extra, I was able to babysit or do chores. I eventually got a part time job because my friends worked there. It was only in recent years I developed a further look into spending/paying off debt and being “financially independent” minus the phone plan. I moved out on my own at 27. I have really focused on savings and spending the past few years. Prior to moving out at 27, I had $16K in savings. I am happy with how far I’ve come financially but still feel behind.
What was your first job and why did you get it? Yes, I babysat for many years for my neighbors making around $10.00 an hour. My first “real” job was working at Chuck E Cheese at 17 making minimum wage. I believe it was like $7.15 back then.
Did you worry about money growing up? No, I am extremely lucky and blessed my parents provided my siblings and I with what we had. I did choose to get a part time job in as I like to shop/go out with my friends.
At what age did you become financially responsible for yourself and do you have a financial safety net? 27. I would say my fiancé is my financial safety yet if something were to happen. We could afford our expenses on his income or mine.
Do you or have you ever received passive or inherited income? Yes, passive income through my parents (college).
Day 1 - Saturday
7:00 AM - My fiancé wakes me up when he finally makes his way upstairs to come to bed. He works nights and often times falls asleep on the couch.
8:00 AM - I finally head downstairs and make a latte with my Nespresso. I’ve tried to cut back on buying coffee out and make drinks at home. I used to go to Starbucks every day and now I average 5-6 times a month.
9:00 AM - I head over to Hobby Lobby to check out Christmas decor. I pick up a rug and some small decor as well as a craft for my niece who is coming to visit in a few weeks. ($38.11) I then head over to Wegmans to pick up a few things I needed that I couldn’t get at Aldi yesterday as well as a few things I forgot. List includes pizza crust, hoisin sauce, coleslaw mix, sweet chili sauce, pita, hummus, paper towels, pasta sauce and garlic bread. I should have enough groceries to last 2 weeks. ($55.83) I wear my mask this whole time. I will not mention this for repetitive purposes each time I go out of my house.
10:00 AM - I stop at a local coffee shop for a cold brew and a bagel. I use a gift card and end up owing a $.67. I put the rest of the change in their tip jar. ($1.00) I head home and make an egg and cheese sandwich with the bagel. I then head to the dollar store to pick up some loose leaf paper, crayons and a coloring book for my niece and some hand soap. ($15.37)
11:30 AM - I hop on the peloton for a 45 minute ride (Robyn’s Live DJ Halloween Ride). I make lunch with some leftover chicken and rice and turn on RHOC.
2:00 PM - We have some apples sitting in the fruit basket so I use those to make an apple pie.
3:30 PM - My future cousin in law and my niece stop by so we can give her a Halloween goody bag. I then make a hummus plate for us to snack on.
7:00 PM - We get ready to head out to dinner in a restaurant near by for a much needed date night. We enjoy some nice Italian food and a few glasses of wine for me. I had a chicken cutlet in basil cream sauce. Fiancé pays. (before the Covid Comments commence - my county is less than 4,000 cases - and all have been adhering to the new normal (masks, distance, etc.))
10:00 PM - We are home from dinner and having a little apple pie. I order a ring guard since my engagement ring slipped off at dinner and Vital Protiens Collagen Powder, which is majorily on sale compared to what it is at Sephora. ($33.21) I end up falling asleep by 10:30 PM.
Day 2 - Sunday
8:00 AM - I wake up, make coffee and start a little cleaning of the house. Wipe down the kitchen and swiffer the floors as well as clean the 2 bathrooms.
10:00 AM - I make some oatmeal and watch Rebecca on Netflix.
12:00 PM - My future SIL drops off my shower gift but I will wait til my MIL is around to open it. We catch up for a bit and my fiancé wakes up.
1:30 PM - I am starving so I snack on some cucumbers and make mini pizzas for the fiancé and I. Yes, I do majority of the cooking in the house (it doesn’t bother me as I enjoy cooking and I prefer eating in. over a year ago - I begun a weight loss journey to feel better about myself - I lost 35 pounds in the past year and a half) If my fiancé was responsible for the food in our house, we would be eating takeout every day or Ramen.
3:00 PM - We end up inviting my MIL for dinner so I run to the store to get more soda and cheese for the buffalo chicken sandwiches I am making us. Soda is not on sale this week, yikes. ($18.53)
4:00 PM - I do a holiday ride on my peloton. Yes, I am one of those people who listens to Christmas music starting Nov. 1st!
5:00 PM - I make buffalo chicken sandwiches, tater tots and some frozen green beans. We have dinner with my MIL. I open the gift she and my SIL for my shower (we postponed the shower to March 2021) which is a KitchenAid mixer. I am excited to use it!
9:00 PM - I head upstairs and do my nighttime routine (serums from the ordinary - I change those up, use retinol as well as some bio-oil). Lights are out by 9:45.
Total - $18.53
Day 3 - Monday
6:40 AM - wake up, check my work phone for e-mails, shower and make a coffee. I noticed it snowed a little overnight.
8:30 AM - I see my Pilates studio is having a donation based class on Thanksgiving morning. I sign up for that. ($15.00)
9:30 AM - I make oatmeal with banana and peanut butter. Sorry in advance, I eat the same thing most days.
12:00 PM - Very productive this morning. I eat leftovers for lunch (buffalo chicken sans bread, tater tots, coleslaw and green beans).
1:30 PM - I take a drive for work to prospect for new customers. I end up grabbing a nitro cold brew at a Starbucks I pass. ($5.25)
2:30 PM - I immediately regret getting the cold brew as my stomach starts to hurt. I power through a few customer requests and data entry the rest of the afternoon.
5:00 PM - I do a 5 minute warm up and 20 minute ride then 10 minute arms (all with Cody!).
5:35 PM - head down stairs and start prepping a teriyaki chicken stir fry. While the chicken marinates, I do a 15 minute barre class on the Peloton app. I start making dinner and throw on some rice.
7:00 PM - I make some peppermint tea with my daily scoop of collagen powder and have a small slice of apple pie with ice cream.
8:00 PM - I shower and do the nightly routine (serums and retinol, brush my teeth and take out my contacts).
8:30 PM - I get in bed and I scroll on my phone until it’s time for bed.
Day 4 - Tuesday
6:15 AM - wake up and get dressed to go for a 30 minute walk. It is 39 degrees and very windy. I listen to Heather McMahan’s podcast.
7:00 AM - I make a latte using my nespresso with almond milk. I start my work computer up. I place my order for the Sephora VIB sale that starts today. I order Inkey Retinol, 2 Large Bottles of Drybar Dry Shampoo, new Tarte Eyeshadow Palettes, Milk Kush Mascara and a new Nars Bronzer. I am restocking/throwing out some old make-up. ($185.59)
8:00 AM - Another latte made and finally in the groove with work.
11:00 AM - I wake my fiancé up to vote! We are able to walk to our polling place so we do that quickly then back to work. I break to make lunch - leftovers again. I use the Buffalo chicken to make a salad. I eat in front of my computer.
3:00 PM - I snack on some more tortilla chips and make a matcha latte to give me a boost of energy.
5:00 PM - I head over to my nail appointment. I recently got back into getting gel again. The salon is pretty rigorous with coming in and out - masks, plexiglass dividers, temperature check and hand washing upon walking in. ($38 plus $7 for tip)
6:00 PM - I make cheesesteaks for dinner with some asparagus and tater tots (because balance, right?). I’ll use these leftovers for lunch tomorrow.
7:00 PM - I eat some ice cream and have peppermint tea and head upstairs for bed. I put on Crazy Rich Asians as I need something light and fluffy to take away from the stress of the day.
10:00 PM - lights out.
Day 5 - Wednesday
6:00 AM - I am woken up by my fiancé’s alarm clock. He never changed it back when Day Light Savings happened on Sunday. I lay in bed until my alarm goes off at 6:40. I body shower and fix my hair to look presentable for the day. I try to wash my hair 2-3 times a week max, hence the need for the large bottles of dry shampoo!
7:00 AM - I make some coffee and start tackling my to-do list for the day. Before I head out on the road, I make some oatmeal.
9:00 AM - I head out on the road to prospect. I stop for gas ($24.04) and a soda ($3.27) while I am out.
11:00 AM - I am back home and working through a few e-mails. I have leftovers for lunch. I eat a cheesesteak with no bread, the asparagus and some chips.
3:00 PM - I decide to take a 15 minute walk as I am tired of staring at a computer screen. My fiancé comes home around 4 PM from work and he will have the night off tonight. He asks what’s for dinner as he had pizza for lunch. It’s leftovers tonight!
5:00 PM - I head to Hot Pilates. (Again -distanced, masks, and sanitizing all happening). Class was so intense today. It felt good to break a sweat!
6:30 PM - My fiancé is napping on the couch so I eat leftovers and then head upstairs to soak in the tub. I hear on the news today there was 24 new Covid cases for our county. We decide to get some ice cream from a local ice cream shop. I get pumpkin cheesecake crunch.
9:30 PM - I do my nighttime routine. I am exhausted so I head to bed early.
Day 6 - Thursday
6:10 AM - I wake up and scroll on my phone until my alarm goes off. I brush my teeth, pull back my hair (I promise I will wash it tomorrow) and get dressed. I do not have to go on the road today so it is leggings and a sweater. I make a latte and start a load of laundry.
8:00 AM - I change over the laundry and make my breakfast. I have a call with my manager at 9:00 AM.
10:00 AM - The call is complete. It went well. We recently shifted focus on the day to day aspect of my job so I do feel a bit behind but overall I think I am making the right strides. I vent to the work bestie and she keeps on building me up! It’s nice when you have someone to lean on day to day.
12:30 PM - I make a bbq chicken personal pizza for lunch and have a soda. I am having a hard time focusing today.
4:30 - I close lap top after an annoying email and head out for a walk. Walking turns into a run. 40 minutes later I’m home (note the last 10 was walking uphill so it’s not all that impressive lol!)
5:30 - I pick up Thai food for dinner from a local place. I get Spicy Goong, my fiancé gets Lobster Pad Thai and we get some spring rolls. My fiancé gave me $45.00 for it (it was $43.00 and change) - I thought it would have been a no spend day but I put $3.00 in for a tip. ($3.00)
7:00 - shower and wash my hair. I have my peppermint tea with collagen. I head upstairs to do nighttime routine - contacts out, retinol on, teeth are brushed. I get under the covers and finish Crazy Rich Asians.
Day 7 - Friday
6:10 AM - wake up and lay in bed until my alarm goes off at 6:40. I get up and curl my hair (Beachwaver - takes like 7 minutes if that), contacts in, brush my teeth and wash my face. I put on jeans, a tank and a sweater as I will need to head out on the road later today.
7:00 AM - I make a latte and head back upstairs to start work.
9:30 AM - I make an egg and cheese sandwich on pita and prepare for a virtual appointment with a customer at 10:00 AM.
11:30 AM - make another personal bbq chicken pizza for lunch.
1:00 PM - I prospect a little. I stop at Starbucks because it’s Friday and I need a treat! ($5.25)
4:15 PM - Most Fridays I stop working at 4 PM. I head out for another run - I shave a minute off my mile as there was less walking today! When I get back I go to the grocery store and grab chips (impulse out of hunger choice - honey BBQ chips), rolls, apples, bananas, feta cheese, an orange and flour. I forget to grab eggs when I’m there that I’ll need for the pasta I’m making tomorrow. I immediately open a bag of chips when I get home. ($26.80)
5:30 PM - I make some brownies for dessert later then I start making dinner. I make a squash (yellow squash and zucchini) and chick pea sauté with Greek seasoning and butter. I then light the grill and my fiancé helps me make the lamb (in the dark!) I top the sauté with feta. It was so delish!
7:00 PM - I shower and get in my PJs. I come downstairs to eat the brownies and have our hot beverage of choice (tea for me and hot chocolate for the fiancé).
9:00 PM - I do the nighttime routine and head upstairs to bed. I put on Netflix and nothing seems appealing. I end up putting on Birds of Prey. I am not one for super hero movies but this seemed the most entertaining option.
11:00 PM - lights out. It takes me a while to fall asleep.

Lastly, reflect on your diary! How do you feel about your spending? Was this a normal week for you? Has this inspired you to make changes or has it given you a “wow I’m doing pretty good” confidence boost? Is there anything you’re actively working on? No need to answer any or all these questions but just use this space to write any thoughts you have.
I feel like this was a normal week for me with the exception of the purchases at Hobby Lobby and Sephora. I normally never spend that much on products but I like to stock up with I have a coupon and I plan on getting rid of some old makeup.
I think I am doing OK financially but I feel like I am so far behind compared to others my age. I have money guilt and I am constantly worrying about if I have enough money for the future.
I’ve made such an effort to watch my spending and worked really hard to not eat out as much. I used to go to Starbucks every day (sometimes twice a day) and buy lunch 2-3 times a week. I really try to be mindful and not waste leftovers as well as limit my Starbucks runs.
